Circulation
Circulation routes through the building are generous and logical. They are designed to encourage people to explore the building and to select their own pathways without being forced to follow a single, linear route. Stairs are broad and open. The cantilevered viewing ports at each side of the top floor provide outlook points over city and sea, and create intriguing signature features from outside.
Movement through the building is enlivened by unexpected delights such as the display cases built into stair landings.
A broad and easily found ground-floor connection between the new wing, Century theatre and heritage galleries ensures HBMAG can weave all the visitor attractions into an integrated experience.
Upperfloor Galleries
These galleries are two of the major set-piece spaces around which HBMAG's new wing is designed. Both are classic art galleries in scale and concept. Each provides beautifully proportioned and extremely flexible environments for enjoying larger collections and works. Floating ceilings modulate the space and support extensive options for temporary subdivisions and settings within each room.
A large sliding wall between the two galleries allows them to operate separately or in conjunction with each other. Both galleries offer the option of supplementary natural daylight to the centre of each room, via sculptural skylight lanterns designed to filter south light into the spaces. The lanterns form a dramatic skyline above the galleries. The natural lighting can be excluded by louvres when necessary.
