Big Plans

The new wing will be an architectural statement, in itself a visitor experience, and will create a great entry to the HBMAG offering.

Urban Design

The new main entry has a lofty canopy roof projecting over the forecourt supported by four slender columns. This entry colonnade shelters the forecourt and will complete the urban space bounded by the domed T&G Building, Masonic Hotel and the Sunbay Colonnade.

The dramatic HBMAG roofline, with its gallery skylight lanterns, will form an emphatic counterpoint to the T&G Building landmark dome at the other end of this key urban space.

Exterior Appearance

The architecture is a contemporary expression of classical design. The clean white surfaces of the solid masonry walls contrast with transparent glass elements and openings to form an elegant backdrop to both the art and the life within, and for the exterior artworks by Sara Hughes.

The new wing is compatible in scale, form and materials with Napier’s heritage buildings, but is unmistakeably of its time and very expressive of HBMAG's progressive and challenging statements.
